About the project
Between june and july 2011 my brother Nino and I travelled to the Mwanza region, in northeastern Tanzania, by the Lake Victoria. Our aim was to get in contact with a sordid phenomenon: the murders of persons affected by albinism, in order to use some of their body parts (members, tongue, genitals, hair) in the preparation of magic potions. This potions are elaborated by certain witchdoctors (mganga en swahili) commissioned by clients. These clients are promised succeeding in their business or obtaining political posts.

Only in the Mwanza district fifteen murders with these characteristics have taken place since 2006, when all this criminal frenzy began.

The existence of gold mines and the subsequent enigma of the streams’ exact location, is given as one of the reasons for the appearance of these crimes. Similar motivations are also valid for the fishing activity.

The extreme poverty and an ancestral faith in the power of witchcraft are the breeding ground of these crimes.

During our stay in the area we interviewed and photographed victims, relatives, associations representatives, witchdoctors and journalists.

On top of this cruel fear, the life of persons with albinism in this part of the world is especially hard. They do not count with the minimum resources to fight against the implacable african sun and their life expectancy is around 30.

As a result of our impressions, we have elaborated Orodha; a brief list of swahili terms used in the communication with persons affected by albinism in the Lake Victoria region. My brother has written the texts and I have worked the images.

Our aim was never to condemn discrimination or cruelty, but a more personal and intimate one: understand the burst of such violence avoiding any judgement.

About the project (in progress)
Muros (Walls) is the name of the project I am working at the moment.

Our lives are conditioned by factors that stand in our way to be able to evolve as persons; restrictions imposed by rulers, fright induced by education, lack of confidence, fear of changes, the unknown, aging, dependency on other people, making decisions...

What kind of people would we be if we were not conditioned? Are our fears true or mainly unfounded? Are we capable of distinguishing between our own criteria and the one imposed by others?

Muros explores these themes with portraits of people who, in one way or another, are not completely free. Besides this; conceptual images, in which in many cases nature play a big role.

Nature is an excellent reference to realize that tasks, that may seem to many of us impossible to reach, can be achieved with perseverance. Based on this, the idea of time becomes a key part of the project.

Gratitude
To Daniel, Anna and Bjørn.

About the project
Canteras is the result of a commission by Pepe Paiz to create a series that would promote Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as a candidate for the European Capital of Europe 2016.

From my point of view, if there´s something that has added cultural value to this town, was the presence of an important british colony for more than 100 years, from the mid-nineteenth century on.

With this work, I´m trying to recreate the colonial ambience remains that can still be found in the town´s main beach; Las Canteras.

I have tried to give a ghostly atmosphere to them. Those years are gone and will never be back, but the influence has stayed in the canarians personality.

Exhibitions
Canteras has been exhibited in the following venues:
"Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Capital Europea de la Cultura 2016", at the Sala Dahe in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. 2010.

About the project
Silencio (Silence) explores the loneliness that contemporary life is leading us all.

In many cases, and thanks to that loneliness, we encounter more quietness and self-confidence than we would ever do accompanied. And there are even times we are in really hostile situations but still prefer to be on our own than with others.

Sometimes I wonder if we can still be considered social beings...

Exhibitions
Silencio has been exhibited in the following venues:
"Espacios abiertos", comissioned by www.fotografiaencanarias.com, in many venues along the Canary Islands. 2006.

Las partes y el todo (The parts and the whole) is a modest call for tolerance and understanding between the different cultures in the world.

About the project
El cubo (The cube) is about the inner loneliness of the individuals, who, even being surrounded by family and friends, can get to feel trapped in a loop or in a dead end road. In this situations, we see no way out. We don´t know how to react to make things change.

This project was done with the help of my friend Daniel Expósito, who took care of all the 3D modelling.

Recognitions
El cubo became winner in the following contest:

About the project
Cotidiana (Everyday life) is about the life of two people; a Down Syndrome girl fighting to make herself a place in society and a yuppy who has achieved success and recognition.

In the first part of the project; El día (The day), both characters have extremely busy agendas from the moment they wake up until the moment they go to bed. These activities, instead of fulfilling their spirits, make them terribly melancholic.

They have empty lives, which are based on what others expect them to do.

But… are they doing what they really want? Do they wish to have a life like the rest? Do they care? Is a Down Syndrome person´s life so different from one´s that is not?

In the second part of the project; Los sueños (The dreams), they yearn for the lives they would really like to have and it shows that differences between both are not as significant as one would expect.

With the aim of differentiating the two realities, the project has been carried out using two totally opposing technical approaches.

For the first part, cold and rigid ambiences; the absence and emotional vacuum, present in the faces of the protagonists, is contrasted with the more relaxed and natural gestures in the pictures of the second part. The scenes of this second part are much more tranquil and relaxed.
