Gran Canaria's Camino de Santiago

A remarkable journey into the lesser-known Gran Canaria's Way of Saint James, a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. With its well-documented historical significance, this ancient path spans from the southern to the northern tip of the island, winding through its mountainous heart. Commissioned by Tourism of Gran Canaria, I had the privilege to capture this unique route through my lens, with the aim of showcasing its beauty and cultural importance.

A historical approach

From its origins as a trade route utilized by the indigenous population, the historical perspective of the 'Camino de Santiago de Gran Canaria' unveils a captivating narrative. Steeped in ancient heritage, the path boasts ruins of a hermitage dedicated to Santiago, echoing centuries of pilgrimages and cultural significance. As this path meanders through the island's diverse landscapes, it traverses sites of profound historical and prehistoric interest, including the enigmatic Cueva del Rey, the iconic Risco Caído, the historic Santiago Square in Gáldar, and the renowned Cueva Pintada Museum.

Landscapes and nature

The variety of landscapes is nothing short of breathtaking, offering a stunning mosaic of environments. It ranges from the picturesque dunes and refreshing oases to the rugged arid ravines and impressive rock formations. In contrast, you'll discover verdant, forested areas, graced by the presence of ample water sources. Adding to the charm, the local flora is a true highlight, featuring an array of native plants like the iconic Canarian palm tree, the rugged cardón, and the vibrant tabaiba.

Traditions

What truly distinguishes the Camino de Santiago de Gran Canaria is the heartfelt encounters with its custodians of memory. This remarkable route introduces you to a diverse array of individuals who passionately preserve the island's cultural heritage. From skilled basket weavers and dedicated laundresses to traditional bakers, shepherds, cheese artisans, pottery makers, and knife craftsmen, these remarkable people breathe life into the island's cherished traditions, making each step along the Camino a journey through time and tradition.

The Culmination

The commission from Tourism of Gran Canaria extended beyond a mere photographic report. With the addition of enlightening interviews with various specialists in different fields and narrative texts crafted by my colleague, Javier Albelo, I designed and developed a captivating website. This website presents the journey through the Camino de Santiago de Gran Canaria using the innovative 'scrollytelling' format. The outcome left our client astonished. Judge it for yourself.
